Glucomannan | What are the side effects of Glucomannan?
Glucomannan is a relatively safe substance and can be taken in large quantities. However, like any other dietary fiber, glucomannan is known to reduce the absorption of a number of other nutrients. It is therefore essential to see to it that other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals are supplemented during the intake of glucomannan.
Glucomannan is also known to have interactions with certain other medicines. Its potential to reduce blood sugar could amplify the effects of hypoglycemic drugs, which are taken by diabetic patients. If the blood sugar levels fall too low, hypoglycemic side effects could be observed and could even cause the person to pass out.
Glucomannan in the tablet form is known to have severe esophageal side effects, can cause the blockage of the esophagus causing extreme discomfort, and can even be fatal. Tablet form of glucomannan is therefore best avoided.
Being a natural diet supplement, it is possible to have allergies to glucomannan as well. The possible signs of allergy after intake of glucomanan are:
Chest Pains Breathing difficulties (feeling of tightness in the throat or chest) Skin rashes, or skin reactions
If any of these signs of allergy towards glucomannan are seen, it is advised to discontinue use of the medicine and consult a physician immediately.
